A Merry Christmas Blast from the Past

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Back in 1979, Art Binley and I planned a special Christmas Spirit Hot Air Balloon Flight. The flight took over a month of planning so we would be able to fly our Santa Balloon in the Albany Airport’s zone of controlled airspace, and to be able to use the Empire State Plaza to launch our flight next to the State Christmas Tree and over the State Capitol Building. TU staff photographer extraordinaire, Skip Dickstein, took the picture that appeared in the Albany Times Union for their December 23 edition, and fed it to the UPI wire service (there was no internet yet folks so that’s how news was spread back then) and it was picked up by other newspapers around the world. We received news-clips from Australia, Europe, plus we appeared in the Washington Post’s December 24th edition of “Santas from Around the World”.
