Flying Weather for Hot Air Balloon Rides

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

I am now available again to do flights. I have space for passengers tomorrow, Thursday morning, and next week. The weather forecast looks best for flying on Thursday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning. Then maybe on Monday, probably good on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Call 518-793-6342 if you want to fly tomorrow morning or next week, I’m available. Mornings meet at 6:15 AM and afternoons at 5 PM.

A Storm Named Irene

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Here’s a recent article from the local paper, The Post Star, on damage to the Lake George area from Irene. From accounts that I’ve seen, power should be restored to most except for the hardest hit and remotest areas by Tuesday night.

Recent Flights and Weather for the Week

Monday, August 29th, 2011

In the calm before the storm, we got in a couple of good flights for some folks. I flew on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. After that I got ready for Irene which did it’s worst with excessive rain and enough wind to blow trees down on power lines and some homes in the area. I will not be flying for a few days while I wait for the flying area to dry. My landowner friends out in the flight area, wouldn’t take to kindly to someone being out in their fields with a balloon right now, with it being so wet after the major dump of rain from Irene. I will keep you informed as to when we will start flying later in the week.

On Friday evening, I flew Tammy from Wynantskill, Sharon from Greenwich, and her dad Don from Tribes Hill, who was celebrating his 80th birthday.

In the perverbial calm before the storm, I flew a group of frinds on Saturday morning. On the flight were Fred and Nancy from CA, Elias from NYC and Stephan from NJ

If you are coming to Lake George this week, check to make sure your hotel wasn’t damaged in the storm. I not sure of the current status, but parts of Lake George Village were underwater due to flooding from run-off, and the main drag, Canada St, through the Village and the Beach Road were closed. We got a lot of rain in a short amount of time. Some shops and hotel/motels were flooded. It should be cleaned up fairly quickly, but it wouldn’t hurt to check ahead to be safe. Here is some info posted online by the local paper, Post Star. This article is about Lake George.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Flying Weather into the Weekend

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Well, here’s the forecast for next 5 days. It’s a rain day for today, Thursday. Then we should have some good flying weather Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and possibly Saturday afternoon, before our flights get suspended for a short period due to Hurricane Irene and it’s potential major rain event on my flight area. Here’s the latest forecast on the path of Irene. If we get a major dump of rain from Irene, I will have to suspend my flights for at least a few days to allow the flight area to dry-out before we start flying again.

Weather Update and Stuff

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Just in case someone was actually interested out there, yup, it’s a nice day today and not so nice tomorrow, Sunday. Canceled this morning’s ride due to low visibility from ground fog caused by yesterday’s heavy thunderstorm rain. Don’t have anything on the schedule for this afternoon (this is not the August that I grew used-to around here for biz), so instead of hanging around to answer the phone and a million and one questions, the wifey and I are heading to Lake Placid to enjoy a beautiful late summer day up in the mountains, and visit some fav places of ours up that way. Here’s your 7 day forecast if interested? The weather next week looks most promising for flying mid week and toward the end of the week to include hopefully the weekend. If you check-out the HPC forecast Prog Charts, just click the advance button top right to advance the maps, you see that Tuesday-Wednesday looks flyable, then Friday and hopefully into the weekend. The maps won’t show next weekend until Monday.

Updating Recent Balloon Flights and Weather

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Time to update recent flights. Earlier in the month, the reservations slowed some, probably because of the children fighting down in DC, making people hesitant to do? And now, it appears that we are past our dry period for the season, check-out the Climate Prediction Center forecast for the balance of the month, at least for now.

Last Friday morning, we flew Sheila, Rob, Anna and Duncan.

The end of a beautiful, late Friday afternoon flight for Jim and Beth.

Saturday morning was the last of the good flying weather. I flew James and his daughter Alexis, who James was sharing some quality dad time with, before she heads-out to college at Fredonia toward the end of the month.

The weather forecast for the balance of the week, as posted today, looks somewhat promising for getting some flights-in. But, if you read the forecast discussion, the weather is not quite as promising past late Thursday into the weekend. So, hopefully, the glass is half full scenario works-out. We could use some dry-time after all the rain from the last couple of days.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Flying Weather into the Weekend and early next Week

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

The weather forecast for the balance of this week looks good for flying (other than tonight) thru at least Saturday morning. It appears that we are in for a soaking rain come Sunday into Monday, and possibly Tuesday. High pressure and dry conditions make a brief return next Wednesday, before another system brings more rain some time on Thursday. Hopefully these recent brief flyable periods, followed by extended rain events and unflyable weather, is not signaling a return to the weather we had earlier in our flight season. Anyhow, nothing you can do other than go with the flow and enjoy!

Weekend Doings and A Look at the Weather for this Week

Monday, August 8th, 2011

What can you do when there is lousy flying weather forecast for the weekend? Well, wifey and I took the opportunity to visit some fav places and visit friends. We are big believers in supporting your local businesses, especially with less than certain times, when your patronage is much appreciated. Our weekend started early Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market in Glens Falls. We like the variety of offerings at the Market, and got some fresh veggies from a variety of vendors, excellent meat from the Lick Springs Beefalo Farm, fresh eggs and a fav of mine, Dilly Sweet Pickles from Puckers Gourmet.

Late morning, we decided to head out into Washington County for lunch and stop-at some of our favorite farm country retailers along the way. For lunch, we headed-out for Salem and Steininger’s, which is our all-time favorite place for lunch. Steininger’s is a place that offers great soups, samiches, and desserts. Plus, if you are a fan of chocolate, this is the place.

Time for lunch

The Cafe was pretty full, even at our 2 PM reservation hour.

The view out the window of Main Street at a sleepy Salem, NY.

After our tasty soup starters, lunch is chicken salid on a croissant for Tani, and chicken curry for me.

We topped lunch off with one of their tasty desserts - fresh peaches, strawberriy jam/coulis, on vanilla ice cream and a buttermilk biscuit.

On the way back to Queensbury, we stopped at the Battenkill Valley Creamery for some of their ice cream to take home, and their farm fresh corn for the corn relish we planned to put-up in canning jars for use through the year. And since we were going past The Gardenworks at MacClan Farms on County Route 30 after visiting the Creamery, we made a stop for wifey to check-out the plant sale going on for her gardens. I picked-up some farm fresh berries and peaches to take home with us.

The Gardenworks is housed in an old converted dairy barn.

Inside they have farm fresh goods, gift items and an art gallery that features local artists.

On Sunday after we finished making our corn relish, we headed off to Vermont to meet-up with friend and fellow balloonist, Rick Pollock from Shelburne. We met-up at Middlebury, home of Middlebury College, for lunch at the Two Brothers Tavern. We took the car ferry across Lake Champlain at Fort Ti.

Wifey had to stop and check this out on the way in to Middlebury.

For wifey, it's a plant thing. In reality, it's some type of free-form sculpture using sticks and branches

Good Times, enjoying some local craft brews and good food.

Stopped for some ice cream before heading back home.

We took the car ferry across Lake Champlain at Crown Point heading back to New York, with a view of the new bridge under construction. On a small world type of thing, the company that is building the bridge, Flatiron Construction from Firestorm CO, their lead engineer for the project is a friend of our son Grant who currently lives in Edwards CO.

Well, that’s it for this posting. Time to get on to other things!! Oh, I almost forgot, the weather for the week…well, it ain’t good for ballooning until probably Thursday, possibly thru Saturday morning. Today we get a front this afternoon with scattered showers, then clearing overnight with a little high pressure for the morning, then more wide-spread rain late Tuesday into Wednesday. Weather Service is currently forecasting a large area of high pressure for the end of the week for Thursday, possibly into part of the weekend. The weekend’s weather currently is muddled due to forecasting models not agreeing on what it will be… so stay tuned for updates.

Weather Update for the Weekend, and Early Next Week

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

The weather forecast for the weekend is for heavy rains possible later today, into early Sunday. The weather should clear some late Sunday, with unsettled weather forecast to return for the early part of the week, thru Wednesday. After that, a large area of high pressure, featuring good flying conditions and lower humidity, moves in for the remainder of the week. There won’t be any flights this weekend due to the flight conditions expected, and there will be few opportunities to fly early in the week due to weather, until we get the mid week frontal passage. I have a number of spaces available later in the week and on the weekend if you want to fly, so contact me to reserve your space to ride in my hot air balloon.

Recent Hot Air Balloon Rides and Flying Weather Update

Friday, August 5th, 2011

The afternoon flying weather hasn’t been the best as of late, and unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck convincing folks on vaca to get up early to enjoy the nice, early morning flying conditions we have been getting this week, except for the one morning flight we did on Wednesday for David and Jennifer.

David arranged a Private Flight for he and Jennifer, his soon to be fiancee.

It was a beautiful morning for a balloon ride.

The proposal.

It's a YES!

All smiles, and the ring.

The weather forecast looks to become unsettled for this weekend, and into next week. While there should be some opportunities to do some flying, it is difficult to determine just which days or flights will work at this time, since the National Weather Service forecast models are all producing a different forecast.
