Santa by Hot Air Balloon

How does Santa deliver all those gifts to all the kiddies when there is no snow for Santa’s sleigh?

Wire photo of a flight I did with friend Art Binley on 12/23/79 from the Empire State Plaza in Albany. We took off next to the State Christmas tree and the State Capitol Building so this shot could be framed by the photographer, Skip Dickstein..

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good Flight!

Hot Air Balloon Ride Flying Weather for last Week of the Month

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The weather forecast for the rest of the week is not looking the best to get any flying done, at least as of this evening. The weather is starting to transition toward our winter season, and this morning, national news was showing snow from Golden Colorado. Our son Grant was living in Golden back in 2009, now living in Grand Junction on the other side of the mountains. On our visit in early November in 2009 we also experienced snow. We got snowed-on in mid April of that year also when we visited his family in Golden, so early/late snow isn’t unheard of. But, it doesn’t last.

This was at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum up in the hills above Golden on our April visit

The same April snow in Golden

And the next day, it looks like this on the Front Range in Golden. That's not North East weather.

If I don’t get to do my Saturday flights, that will be it for this year for my hot air balloon rides.  I will start flying again in the Spring of 2012.

Recent Hot Air Balloon Rides and Weather for the Week

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

The Columbus Holiday Weekend featured the best flying conditions that we have seen all season. Unfortunately, our weather looks to return to it’s wet ways for this week and into the coming weekend. We did a lot of flying over the long holiday weekend, starting with Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, I flew Paul and Laura from Broadalbin, celebrating Paul's birthday.

On Saturday afternoon, I flew Keith and Alexandra from Rotterdam. Keith proposed to Alexandra on the flight.

On Sunday morning, it was Chris and Maria from Ridgewood NY on-board.

On Sunday afternoon, it was Tim and Todd from New York City, and Jason and Samantha from Clifton Park.

On Monday morning, Bill and Kathy from Hagerstown MD flew. We took the afternoon off.

Tuesday morning, I flew Peter and Echol from Gloversville, the last of our string of flights.

I told you we had good flying conditions for Friday through Tuesday. Now, we rest and plan our trip to Virginia. Cheers everyone!

Latest Hot Air Balloon Ride and Weather for Columbus Day Weekend Balloon Flights

Friday, October 7th, 2011

The weather forecast for the Columbus Day Weekend is spectacular, and just in time for fall foliage flying. The weather looks good right through mid week, before we have a chance to see any more rain.

This is Brenda and Wayne from Galway on our early morning flight.

This is John from Lake George and Jay from Nanuet, also on the morning flight

It’s going to be a great weekend to get out and enjoy some fantastic fall weather and sights.

Recent Hot Air Balloon Rides and Flying Weather into the Weekend

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The weather hasn’t been the best for flying lately, it’s been rather wet. We did manage to get a couple of flights-in.

On Sunday evening, I flew Don (standing) from Valatie, and Paul and Carol (seated) from Springfield MA

On Monday evening, I flew Greg and Sonia from Etters PA, and John from Charlton

The forecast is rather wet for the next couple of days, and the flying weather according to HPC maps, doesn’t look flyable until next week.

Recent Flying Activity and Weather for the Week

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Good flying weather has been a scarce commodity as of late. The end of August and the month of September has been rather wet. But, we have managed to get some flying accomplished.

On the 13th, Baker and I went over to Argyle Central School to do an annual balloon demo for the Elemantary school kids.

We do a couple of these every fall for the schools out in our flying area, around the time of the big balloon festival at the airport in Queensbury. The area always gets worked-up in anticipation of all the balloons coming to town for this event.

On the evening of the 16th, I flew Shari and Patrick from Union KY who were celebrating their recent marriage.

I took a pass on flying on Saturday due to a lack of wind on both flights. The conditions improved on Sunday for flying.

On the morning of the 18th, I flew Jennifer and Craig from Old Greenwich CT who were celebrating their 10th anniversary.

On the evening of the 18th, Marc and Amanda from Milford CT finally got to use their wedding gift of a balloon flight from 2009.

On Monday morning, Baker and I went over to Hartford Central School for a balloon demo for their Elementary School kids and teachers.

It’s looking like Monday was the last of the good days, possibly until next week. Currently, the forecast for the rest of the week is not good. There is uncertainty on how much and when it will rain the rest of this week and into the weekend. Stay tuned, I will update the weather forecast tomorrow or later when the details become certain for our flying weather for the balance of this week.

Recent Flight and Flying Weather for 1st Week of September

Monday, September 5th, 2011

There hasn’t been much flying done lately due to the weather. Last week, we got hammered, not as bad as some areas fortunately, by Irene’s rain, and just plain lousy weather for the holiday weekend. The only flight of late was on Friday, when I flew Dale and her mom Dorothy to celebrate Dorothy’s 80th birthday.

Dorothy and Dale

The forecast weather for this week, is not the best for flying until maybe next Friday or the weekend. It’s very wet today for Labor Day and again mid week when we get visited by the remnants of T/S Lee and it’s rain. The area my require some drying before we can get out late in the week to fly again, and then, there is Katia that’s out in the Atlantic. Fortunately, the forecast track keeps Katia out to sea.

Recent Flights and Weather for the Week

Monday, August 29th, 2011

In the calm before the storm, we got in a couple of good flights for some folks. I flew on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. After that I got ready for Irene which did it’s worst with excessive rain and enough wind to blow trees down on power lines and some homes in the area. I will not be flying for a few days while I wait for the flying area to dry. My landowner friends out in the flight area, wouldn’t take to kindly to someone being out in their fields with a balloon right now, with it being so wet after the major dump of rain from Irene. I will keep you informed as to when we will start flying later in the week.

On Friday evening, I flew Tammy from Wynantskill, Sharon from Greenwich, and her dad Don from Tribes Hill, who was celebrating his 80th birthday.

In the perverbial calm before the storm, I flew a group of frinds on Saturday morning. On the flight were Fred and Nancy from CA, Elias from NYC and Stephan from NJ

If you are coming to Lake George this week, check to make sure your hotel wasn’t damaged in the storm. I not sure of the current status, but parts of Lake George Village were underwater due to flooding from run-off, and the main drag, Canada St, through the Village and the Beach Road were closed. We got a lot of rain in a short amount of time. Some shops and hotel/motels were flooded. It should be cleaned up fairly quickly, but it wouldn’t hurt to check ahead to be safe. Here is some info posted online by the local paper, Post Star. This article is about Lake George.
