Where or where has My Winter Gone?

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

I know it’s been a while since my last post. It’s been kinda a blah winter, providing me little incentive to write. Anyhow, if you’re wondering where our winter went this year, last November, YNN posted a detailed video forecast on what to expect for December, January and February 2011-12, and it’s been spot-on. It’s the best explanation I’ve seen on cause and affect of seasonal trends of our regional weather. Listen and weep if you’re an outdoor winter weather enthusiast.

Weather for the Week of 11/7

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Tuesday and Wednesday’s weather is a real pleasure to get this late in the fall. I could have used the dry weather we’ve been getting of late back in August, September and October when I was flying, or should I say, trying to fly between the rain drops. Oh well, such is life in the north-country. I guess, there is always next year? Later in the week and next week, the weather looks to get back to our usual for this year, wetter than normal-maybe?

Weekend Weather and Thing To Do

Friday, November 4th, 2011

The weekend weather forecast looks cool and sunny, with no rain forecast until well into the next week. While I can’t help you with balloon rides this weekend, there still are things to do in the area. Lake George is fairly quiet at this time of year, with many of it’s offerings no longer open. Yet, there are many good places to shop and dine this time of year. You have the factory outlets off exit 20 of I-87. Three of my favorite local restaurants are listed 1, 3 & 4 in this tripadvisor post. You have to add Bistro Leroux to the local good eats list. Saratoga Springs remains lively with many fine restaurants, minus its summer racing scene, and is a short drive down 87; plus Lake Placid is about an hour and a half north up I-87 and Rt 73. Hiking in the woods may not be a great idea, since hunting season now is open in the northern zone, which includes Lake George north into the Adirondacks. You can get an idea of things to do from a fairly complete list of goings-on from Lake George to Saratoga Springs on the LakeGeorge.com web site. Enjoy your time in the area.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Flying Weather for last Week of the Month

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The weather forecast for the rest of the week is not looking the best to get any flying done, at least as of this evening. The weather is starting to transition toward our winter season, and this morning, national news was showing snow from Golden Colorado. Our son Grant was living in Golden back in 2009, now living in Grand Junction on the other side of the mountains. On our visit in early November in 2009 we also experienced snow. We got snowed-on in mid April of that year also when we visited his family in Golden, so early/late snow isn’t unheard of. But, it doesn’t last.

This was at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum up in the hills above Golden on our April visit

The same April snow in Golden

And the next day, it looks like this on the Front Range in Golden. That's not North East weather.

If I don’t get to do my Saturday flights, that will be it for this year for my hot air balloon rides.  I will start flying again in the Spring of 2012.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Flying Weather

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Well, it looks like I’m off through this weekend. But, there is light at the end of that long, dark, damp tunnel. The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a greater chance of dry weather from the 4th of October through at least the 12th of the month, just in time for the peak fall foliage flying season.

Recent Hot Air Balloon Rides and Flying Weather into the Weekend

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The weather hasn’t been the best for flying lately, it’s been rather wet. We did manage to get a couple of flights-in.

On Sunday evening, I flew Don (standing) from Valatie, and Paul and Carol (seated) from Springfield MA

On Monday evening, I flew Greg and Sonia from Etters PA, and John from Charlton

The forecast is rather wet for the next couple of days, and the flying weather according to HPC maps, doesn’t look flyable until next week.

Flying Weather for Hot Air Balloon Rides

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

I am now available again to do flights. I have space for passengers tomorrow, Thursday morning, and next week. The weather forecast looks best for flying on Thursday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning. Then maybe on Monday, probably good on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Call 518-793-6342 if you want to fly tomorrow morning or next week, I’m available. Mornings meet at 6:15 AM and afternoons at 5 PM.

A Storm Named Irene

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Here’s a recent article from the local paper, The Post Star, on damage to the Lake George area from Irene. From accounts that I’ve seen, power should be restored to most except for the hardest hit and remotest areas by Tuesday night.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Flying Weather into the Weekend

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Well, here’s the forecast for next 5 days. It’s a rain day for today, Thursday. Then we should have some good flying weather Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and possibly Saturday afternoon, before our flights get suspended for a short period due to Hurricane Irene and it’s potential major rain event on my flight area. Here’s the latest forecast on the path of Irene. If we get a major dump of rain from Irene, I will have to suspend my flights for at least a few days to allow the flight area to dry-out before we start flying again.

Weather Update and Stuff

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Just in case someone was actually interested out there, yup, it’s a nice day today and not so nice tomorrow, Sunday. Canceled this morning’s ride due to low visibility from ground fog caused by yesterday’s heavy thunderstorm rain. Don’t have anything on the schedule for this afternoon (this is not the August that I grew used-to around here for biz), so instead of hanging around to answer the phone and a million and one questions, the wifey and I are heading to Lake Placid to enjoy a beautiful late summer day up in the mountains, and visit some fav places of ours up that way. Here’s your 7 day forecast if interested? The weather next week looks most promising for flying mid week and toward the end of the week to include hopefully the weekend. If you check-out the HPC forecast Prog Charts, just click the advance button top right to advance the maps, you see that Tuesday-Wednesday looks flyable, then Friday and hopefully into the weekend. The maps won’t show next weekend until Monday.
